The topic of the U.S. president came up when Stephen Colbert asked Chappelle about hosting the first Saturday Night Live show following Trump’s election, where he ended his monologue by saying we should give Donald Trump a chance.

“You hosted SNL the week after Trump was elected … and you said ‘we gotta give this guy a chance.’ Which I agree with, you gotta give the guy a chance but not an inch,” Colbert said to Chappelle.

“Now we’re seven, getting on eight months in, how do you feel about the chances he’s been given? Do you still want to give him a chance? Or have you given him all the chances he’s going to get?” Colbert asked.

“It’s not like I wanted to give him a chance that night,” Chappelle replied.

“How do you feel about the guy now?” Colbert asked.

“You know, listen, man, in the last six months, I think we’re all getting an education about the presidency. I don’t know that I’ve ever heard in this popular discourse people discussing ethics this much and I didn’t even realize how ethics was supposed to work at that level of government. He’s putting all this stuff on the forefront,” Chappelle said.

“Nobody really talks about oxygen until somebody’s got their hands around your throat,” Colbert quipped.

Chappelle, who said Trump’s shocking victory made many white Americans realize how black Americans feel every election, said Trump’s win has led to some progress.
