City battles contractor over Peace Bridge cost overruns

CALGARY- The picturesque Peace Bridge has been up for a year, but the landmark is once again making headlines for all the wrong reasons.

The $25 million project faced numerous construction problems and long delays, and now the contractor is formally asking the city for more money, to cover overruns caused by the delays.

One councillor says they don’t plan to hand any money over to Graham Infrastructure.

“It was a fixed price contract, and it was a project that was significantly delayed,” says Druh Farrell. “Council has made it quite clear they have no appetite to pay more for this project. To me, fixed price contracts mean something.

“We will see what happens.”

It could take months, perhaps years for the issue to be resolved.

The city hasn’t said how much money Graham Infrastructure is asking for.
