A heat warning for Calgary from Environment Canada remained in place on Wednesday.

The warning, originally issued on Tuesday afternoon, cautioned a period with highs of 29 C or greater and minimum overnight temperatures near 14 C will run from Wednesday until Friday.

“It’s going to be a warm one today as we push to 30 C,” Global Calgary meteorologist Jordan Witzel said Wednesday. “The next couple of days will be above that 30 C mark for much of Alberta.”

Heat warnings are issued when very high temperatures are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.

Tips from Alberta Health Services for handling a heat warning:

  • Consider rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day.
  • Take frequent breaks from heat, spending time indoors at cooled public buildings (including malls or indoor pools).
  • Drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated.
  • Do not leave any person or pet inside a closed vehicle.
  • Apply a sunscreen of at least sun protection factor (SPF) 30, at least 20 minutes before heading outdoors. Be sure the SPF 30 screens out both UVA and UVB rays, and reapply frequently (as directed on product label).
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses (with a UVA/UVB CSA certified seal).
  • Wear light-coloured long-sleeved shirts and pants that cover skin.
