Calgary police say “excessive speed” is considered a “significant factor” in a fiery crash on Glenmore Trail on Saturday that sent three people to hospital.
In a news release, police said a green Ford Taurus burst into flames after rolling into a ditch just before 1:30 a.m.
Investigators said the vehicle was travelling westbound and had just passed the turnoff for southbound Stoney Trail when the driver attempted to overtake a slower-moving vehicle in the left-hand lane.
Police said it was as she returned to the right-hand lane that the driver lost control of the Taurus, causing the vehicle to leave the road, become “airborne” and crash into a drainage ditch.
The driver of the vehicle, a 20-year-old woman, was taken to the Foothills Medical Centre, where she remains in life-threatening condition.
Two passengers from the vehicle, a 28-year-old man and a 20-year-old man, sustained minor injuries ranging from broken bones to minor bruises, according to police.
Aside from speed, police also said alcohol and drugs are being considered as factors in the crash.
