Crown wants Paul Calnen murder conviction upheld

The Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service has confirmed they plan on appealing a recent decision by the province’s Court of Appeal.

Last month, the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal tossed out a second-degree murder conviction for Paul Trevor Calnen and granted the Halifax man a new trial.

In their ruling, the Court of Appeal said there was insufficient evidence to support the second-degree murder charge and inadequate instructions to the jury by the trial judge.

In November 2015, a jury found Calnen guilty of killing his girlfriend, Reita Jordan.

Jordan went missing in March 2013. Two months after her disappearance, Calnen was charged with her murder.

The Public Prosecution Service says they have until August 14 to file a Notice of Appeal with the Supreme Court of Canada, which they intend to do.

Spokesperson Chris Hansen said they want Calnen’s conviction upheld.

Calnen is currently serving a five year sentence after he pleaded guilty to committing an indignity to a human body. In this case, that indignity was burning Jordan’s remains.
