Filip Peliwo earned his sixth International Tennis Federation Futures Pro Circuit title of the season on Sunday at the Riverside Badminton and Tennis Club in Saskatoon.
In the Houghton Boston Tennis Classic Finals, the Canadian defeated American Marcos Giron 7-6, 6-7, 6-1.
The 23-year-old, who trains in Vancouver, got out to a 5-2 lead in the second, but Giron fought back to claim the set in an extra tie-breaker set.

However in the third, Peliwo was leading 4-0, and never looked back on his way to winning the set 6-1, and the match.
“I think the fact that it’s in Canada, it’s my first title in a while in Canada in front of a nice big crowd,” Peliwo said after the victory. “Having had a few chances as well to win the match in the second set, losing those chances getting to the third and pulling it out with some good tennis I think that was big.”
Peliwo entered the tournament as the fourth seed, and defeated Alexander Sarkissian, the No. 1 seed, in the semi-finals on Saturday.
“Considering I missed seven months of the year last year, through injury and illness, it’s really nice just to be able to play and be healthy all the way through and play good tennis again,” Peliwo said.
Giron, who battled through two three-set matches to get to the final, was disappointed, but happy with his overall result.

“I am a little upset, I wish I could have won that, but he played well and you know I could have lost 2nd round,” Giron said. “Just to be in the finals, I’m happy about that.”
Peliwo becomes the third Canadian to win the Houghton Boston Tennis Classic since 2011, after Vasek Pospisil and Philip Bester.
