Edmonton police said officers were following a reported stolen truck at 170 Street and 87 Avenue at around 8 p.m. Monday.

The vehicle was followed west of the city in the area of Winterburn Road. Police said the situation eventually entered into a “criminal flight” at Whitemud Drive.

Police said officers stopped the pursuit once the truck began driving on the wrong side of the road. A short time later, the truck collided head on with a car.

The male driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene and a female passenger was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police said three suspects were apprehended after attempting to flee on foot from the stolen truck. They weren’t injured and charges are pending against the three individuals, according to police.

A significant police presence could be seen on the westbound Whitemud Drive off-ramp by Anthony Henday Drive, shortly after 9 p.m.
