Back lane shooting leads to arrest and attempted murder charge in Winnipeg

WINNIPEG — A 32-year-old man has been arrested and faces a number of charges including attempted murder after a shooting in a back lane on Sunday.

At approximately 10 p.m. Sunday, emergency crews rushed to a back lane in the 500 block of Sherbrook Street for reports of an injured man. A 36-year-old man was found with an upper body gunshot wound and was transported to hospital in critical condition. As of Monday night, he remained in critical conditoin.

Kalvin George Hitchings was located during a traffic stop at around 8:30 p.m. Monday at Main Street and Manitoba Avenue. Officers found a loaded handgun in the vehicle.

Police said Hitchings knew the victim and was known to police.

Hitchings has been charged with: 

  • Attempt murder using a firearm
  • Use firearm during commission of an indictable offence
  • Careless use of firearm
  • Pointing a firearm
  • Possess weapon
  • Possess firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm in motor vehicle
  • Possess firearm, restricted weapon of ammunition contrary to prohibition order x 2
  • Fail to comply with probation order
