In celebration of Canada 150, ParticipACTION has compiled a list of 150 activities for Canadians to try.

With that list in mind the city held a fun day at Killarney Lake Park with just over 30 of those activities available.

“The idea is to invite people to Killarney Lake Park in order introduce them to summer activities and hope that they leave the park with some ideas,” explained city recreation officer Justine Blizzard. “We’re hoping that people come back to the park, or any park and enjoy the outdoors.”

Fredericton Mayor Mike O’Brien was on hand to kick off the festivities.

He says his goal is to make the New Brunswick capital the most physically active city in eastern Canada.

“You don’t have to be a runner like myself, or be a mountain biker like certain people,” O’Brien said. “All you have to do is get out on the trail, walk, picnic somewhere, go to a beach, have a swim and get out and have some fresh air.”

Killarney Park is sometimes called Fredericton’s hidden gem, boasting fields, a beach for swimming and canoeing, areas for fishing and several kilometres of walking and cross-country skiing trails.

Recreation officials say physical activity is not only a fun way to spend time with family and friends, but also key to staying healthy inside and out, and that Killarney Park is the perfect place to do it.

“Being in the woods is a fantastic thing,” Blizzard said. “It really calms you down automatically.”
