ZANESVILLE, Ohio – A couple has gotten back nearly $100,000 they mistakenly donated to Goodwill Industries in Ohio.
The Times Recorder reported two Goodwill employees in Zanesville initially thought it was play money or counterfeit cash after finding $97,000 in 100-dollar bills in a duffel bag inside a box of clothes last week.
Goodwill Store Manager Janelle Shaffer was shocked when she saw the bag of money.
“It was all 100-dollar bills, and I’m just like no way,” Shaffer told NBC news affiliate WHIZ. “I’m looking and we are checking it with the counterfeit pen holding it up in the light, and was like yeah, this money is real.”
The duffel bag also contained legal documents and the last will and testament for Dan and Lynette Leckrone of Lewisville, about 185 kms west of Columbus.
“Well according to her husband, they came here because there was no local Goodwill near Lewisville and they had family in Zanesville,” Shaffer said. “So they brought it up here when they were visiting Zanesville.”
After numerous messages from Goodwill went unreturned, the couple finally retrieved the money from the Zanesville Police Department, where Goodwill had taken it for safekeeping.

Dan Leckrone said he withdrew the cash the couple had saved for a new home to deposit in another bank and hid it in the trunk of the car, according to the Times Recorder.
After picking up the money, the Leckrone family took it straight to the bank.
“We are so thankful to everyone that we got our money back.” Leckrone told the Times Recorder.
