A stretch of sidewalk on Barrington Street that has been closed for more than a year is supposed to reopen in November, according to the Canadian military.

The stretch is between Valour Way, which connects to North Street (close to the Macdonald Bridge), and Niobe Gate Bridge (close to Devonshire Avenue).

It was closed off on June 24, 2016, because the adjacent retaining wall at HMC Dockyard needs to be repaired.

“The wall is over 100 years old, and time has not been kind to it over the years,” military spokesperson Mike Bonin said in a phone interview earlier this month.

The problematic area in question is about 30 metres in length near Niobe Gate Bridge, he added. The military let the municipal government know that the stretch was unsafe for pedestrians, so the government closed off the sidewalk.

The military has been working on budgeting and plans to put out a tender for the project in early July, award it later that month, and then have work commence in August, Bonin said.

Part of one lane of Barrington Street will be closed for part of the time during the project, which will entail nearly 290 metres of wall repair work.
