A home in Stony Plain sustained extensive damage after a vehicle lost control, slammed into the house and caught fire early Saturday morning.
At around 2:30 a.m., a vehicle lost control coming around a sharp corner on Oatway Drive in Stony Plain, Alta., according to local fire crews. Officials said the vehicle hit a tree before crashing into the house.
The vehicle caught fire, which quickly spread to the house. Luckily, no one was home at the time.
“The entire roof is severely damaged. The fire damage was remarkably contained to the attic area, only one bedroom sustained fire damage on the inside,” said Stony Plain fire chief Trevor Mistal.
“The fuel system of the vehicle ruptured and that’s what caused the rapid growth of the fire in the vehicle and on the outside of the home.”
Natasha Lefort, who has lived in the house for eight years, was camping with her kids and her mom. She said her neighbour called her at around 2 a.m. to tell her what happened.
“She got them out of the vehicle, and the vehicle exploded and my house caught on fire,” Lefort said.
Lefort made the 45-minute drive home to find her house damaged by fire. She said she’s thankful she and her family weren’t home at the time.
“By the time I got here, the fire was out and the people were gone to hospital. There were fire trucks and ambulances and police everywhere,” she said.
“Thank God I wasn’t home and my kids weren’t home. Everything else can be replaced but family and friends and stuff like that, that’s irreplaceable.”
Three people were in the vehicle at the time and suffered minor injuries, according to RCMP.
Mounties said Sunday that charges are pending.
It’s not known if speed or alcohol were involved.
