“It appears there was no braking prior to the vehicle striking the bridge abutment,” Stibbe said.

“We’re going to have to look at the vehicle to determine whether or not there was a mechanical failure with the motor prior to the collision or if it was in fact driver error.”

Police said a 25-year-old female driver was pronounced dead in hospital. Stibbe said she was not wearing a seat belt.

The male passenger in his 30s was transported to a trauma centre with broken bones.

“She was not wearing a seat belt. It appears the passenger was,” Stibbe said. “Would the seat belt have saved her life? With any luck it would have, but it definitely saved the life of the passenger.”
