A debate over the new Pierrefonds-Roxboro library Tuesday got heated between Pierrefonds-Roxboro mayor Jim Beis and Montreal city councillor Justine McIntyre.
The two have disagreed on many issues in the past, most recently, the plan to tear down and rebuild the borough’s main public library and replace it with a modern $20 million structure.
Their difference of opinion on the project spilled into council chambers Tuesday.
“I am completely, completely against the demolition of a functioning and very highly appreciated building,” McIntyre said.
Beis accused McIntyre of being “against culture and architecture” because she disagreed with the new library plans.
The city councillor then took to Twitter to accuse Beis of acting like a bully and to tell him to grow up.
“Honestly, it’s been for the last three years, I’ve been sidelined and treated basically as an outsider,” she told Global News.
“If he’s not going to debate with me and instead he’s going to stand up and shout at me and make unfounded accusations, I’m going to call him out on that. That is bullying.”
In the end, the vote to demolish the structure passed.
Work to demolish the library is expected to begin next month with the new one slated to open in 2018.
