Playground area at Devonian Gardens to reopen on Thursday

Parents and children will be able to enjoy the playground area at Devonian Gardens starting Thursday, March 9.

Calgary’s indoor botanical park had been expected to reopen at the end of 2016, but the date was pushed back when the city found repair work in the park was more complicated than expected.

The park closed in July because of faulty planters and in January the city said more leaks had been found.

The playground area is the first section of the garden set to reopen, with the entire park scheduled to reopen by summer 2017.

“Right now we are assessing the condition of each planter individually to determine the repairs required, making those repairs and then moving on to the next one,” Calgary Parks project manager

David Harrison said in a statement Wednesday.

The playground area features over 1,100 plants, as well as 11 trees and 11 shrubs and palms. There is also a jungle gym and a climbing wall. The glass bridge connecting the food court to the play area will also reopen Thursday.

There are more than 550 trees and 18 different species throughout the entire garden. It is located on the top floor of the CORE shopping centre in downtown Calgary. For more information on the repairs visit the city’s website.

The next section of the park is scheduled to reopen in mid to late spring.
