Several people were taken to hospital Friday following a collision on the eastbound 401 that involved upwards of 20 vehicles, Middlesex OPP.

The crash happened just after 12 p.m. and forced police to shut down the eastbound lanes at Wonderland Road for around two hours.

In all, five people were taken to hospital, one with serious but non-life threatening injuries, police said.

“Fire, EMS, and police are on scene attending to all the persons involved,” OPP West Region Sgt. Dave Rektor told AM980 around 1 p.m.

Police had said the roadway would likely remain closed “several hours” for cleanup and investigation, but by 2:10 p.m., officials announced the roadway had been reopened.

Aside from the chain-reaction crash that prompted the shutdown of the eastbound lanes on the 401, Rektor said OPP have been responding to crashes since the snow first started flying overnight.

“It’s been extremely busy. I don’t have a fix on the number of crashes but it’ll be probably a couple of hundred that we’ve responded to already. There’s a whole bunch that have been unreported yet that we haven’t even got to.”

While Environment Canada is forecasting light snow and flurries in London on Friday, with roughly five centimetres of accumulation throughout the day, blowing snow is impeding visibility, especially along the 400 series west of London.
