An investigation has been launched by the province’s Special Investigations Unit into an incident on the eastbound 401 on Tuesday that saw a 38-year-old man sustain a foot injury during an interaction with the OPP.
In a release issued on Tuesday, provincial police said officers had received a call about a tractor trailer being “all over the road” on the eastbound 401 near Dutton around 12:35 p.m.
After locating the vehicle, police attempted and failed to stop the truck, and the truck continued driving east toward London, moving “from rumble strip to rumble strip,” police said.

“Elgin County officers and Middlesex County officers were able to set up a moving containment, close on-ramps to the 401 in London area and bring the tractor trailer to a stop after the Colonel Talbot exit,” the police release read, noting that traffic on the highway was temporarily stopped as the man was taken into custody.
The unidentified man was later charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle, police said, adding that no vehicles were damaged in the incident and that further charges were possible.
The SIU says their probe stems from an interaction that occurred between police and the driver after he had been removed from the tractor trailer. No information about the interaction has been released, but the SIU says the driver was taken to hospital and was later diagnosed with a foot injury.
No other details have been released, and the SIU has called on any witnesses to come forward by contacting the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
The SIU is an arm’s-length agency that investigates reports involving police where death, serious injury, or sexual assault has occured.
