MONTREAL – In 2012, 35 people were murdered in Montreal; the same number of homicides as in 2011.
The numbers were released by the city’s major crime unit in its annual homicide tally.
In 2010, the number of murders in the city was 37. There were 31 in 2009 and 29 in 2008.
Police noted that at 35, the number of homicides is lower than the averages recorded in Montreal over the past 10 years (at 40) and past 20 years (50).

Motives that led to these crimes remain roughly the same as last year.
In 2012, the causes were dominated by murders linked to domestic or conjugal violence or crimes of passion (10 murders), followed by 7 homicides related to the settling of accounts between different groups involved in organized crime and 6 murders that appear to be gang-related.
In 2011, the three main causes were conflicts (11), street gangs (8) and organized crime (5).
There were also more deaths linked to Italian organized crime – 5 in 2012, as compared with 2 in 2011.
Finally, of the 35 homicides in 2012, 18 cases are still under investigation, while 17 have been solved by police.
