OTTAWA – An Edmonton company is voluntarily recalling one of its products in Canada and the United States over an issue with labelling.
Kinnikinnick Foods specializes in gluten-free baked goods for people with dietary restrictions.
It’s been forced to recall 3,000 of its pie crusts because egg doesn’t appear as an ingredient on the label.
Kinnikinnick CEO Jerry Bigam says the problem started when the company ran out of packaging for the crusts.

He says at the same time, there was a minor change in one of the ingredients that would require a change in the product’s labels.
He says when the new labels were printed and put on the boxes, nobody noticed that eggs were missing as a listed ingredient.
Because eggs can cause potentially life-threatening allergic reactions in some people, the crusts were recalled right away.
Bigam says it took just a few hours to inform all of the company’s North American distributors about the problem, and he doesn’t believe any of the crusts made it onto store shelves.
The affected pie crusts were sold in 290 gram packages with best before dates of Nov. 20th and 21st, 2013 and Dec. 11th and 14th, 2013 (upc 6 20133 00600 9).
The product was sold in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario, and possibly the rest of the country.
There have been no reported reactions associated with the pie crusts and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency is monitoring the recall.
