City of Edmonton road construction projects

EDMONTON – Following news that the Jasper Avenue road work is way behind schedule, Global News takes a closer look at other major road construction projects around our city and whether there’s a trend of them being on, ahead, or behind schedule. The results may surprise you.

For the City’s 2012 construction season, most of the major projects were completed on schedule. In fact, some projects, like the Grierson Road Bridge, were completed months ahead of schedule.

Kelly FitzGibbon, with the City of Edmonton’s Transportation Department says out of 132 total projects for the year, the City finished 129 on time.

The projects that are being carried over to 2013 are the Central LRT & Jasper Ave Streetscape, Capital Boulevard, the 17 Street & 23 Avenue upgrades, and the 118 Avenue Streetscape.

Major projects that were completed in 2012 include Fort Road, Grierson Road Bridge over McDougall Hill/Scona Road, 82 Avenue Bridge over Argyll Road, 97 Street between Yellowhead Trail and 137 Avenue, Ellerslie Road Bridge over Blackmud Creek, and Anthony Henday Drive connectors.

During the 2012 construction season, $146 million was spent on bridges, paving and other growth projects in Edmonton. The City completed 11 major arterial road projects, 29 collector paving projects and nine growth projects. To view the City’s construction map, click here.
