The Kelowna Rockets defeated the Edmonton Oil Kings 2-1 in a shootout on Sunday afternoon in Rogers Place.
The game was slow offensively as both teams were scoreless through two periods.
In the third period the Oil Kings broke the tie scoring early. Jack Cowell and the Rockets responded seven minutes later and the game remained knotted at 1-1 for the rest of regulation.
Overtime solved nothing, so for the first time this season Kelowna went to a shootout.
The Rockets first shooter was Nick Merkley and he hit the post. The second shooter was Kole Lind and he was stopped by the Oil Kings net minder Patrick Dea. The Rockets third shooter was Jake Kryski and he made no mistake putting the puck just over Dea’s pad for the winner.
Michael Herringer stopped 28 of 29 shots he faced improving to 16-8-1-0.
The Rockets improve to 21-12-2-0 on the year.
Sunday afternoon’s game was the seventh and final game of the long road trip for the Rockets, they are now done until after Christmas.
The Rockets next home game is December 27th when they host the Kamloops Blazers.
