Bernadette Smith seeking NDP nomination in Point Douglas

WINNIPEG — A day after MLA Kevin Chief announced he was stepping down as MLA in Point Douglas, a local activist is hoping to take his spot.

On Thursday, Bernadette Smith announced she will be running for the New Democratic Party nomination in the area.

Smith, a Métis woman who grew up in the North End, is an advocate for missing and murdered Indigenous women in the province.

She is the co-founder of the Coalition for Families of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women of Manitoba. She also helped launched Drag the Red, a movement run by volunteers who take to Winnipeg rivers by boat and on foot looking for missing people.

Her sister, Claudette Osborne has been missing from Winnipeg since 2008.

Smith will formally announce her plans to seek the NDP nomination Friday morning at Neechi Commons.
