SaskEnergy undergoing third major expansion phase

REGINA – For the third time in its history, SaskEnergy is undergoing a major expansion phase.

Economic and population growth are driving the latest increase in demand for natural gas, an expansion not seen in a generation.

SaskEnergy says it has connected 33,000 new customers in the last five years, four times the average over the previous 10 years.

By the end of this year, 7,000 new residential, business and industrial customers will be added to the natural gas grid in the province.

“Demand for new natural gas connections demonstrates how sustained this level of growth has become in our communities,” said Tim McMillan, the minister responsible for SaskEnergy.

McMillian also said activity will continue at elevated levels for the next two years.

SaskEnergy’s first growth period was in the 1950’s when natural gas was brought into urban areas for the first time.

The second period took place in the 1980’s during a rural expansion initiative.
