RCMP have charged a former Banff Centre employee following allegations of computer hacking.

Officers launched an investigation in February after receiving reports from the Banff Centre that the computer network and IT systems at the art school had been compromised by a suspected cyber-attack.

In a news release, RCMP explained that the Banff Centre had hired Deloitte, a cyber-security forensic team, to examine their network data. The team found the network had been compromised between December 2015 and January 2016.

On Tuesday, RCMP announced 50-year-old Tomas Towne had been charged with mischief.

Towne was released on a promise to appear and is scheduled to make his first court appearance in Canmore Provincial Court on Jan. 4.
