Alberta man allegedly escapes Sheriff’s custody, gets arrested and charged

A man has been arrested after escaping custody in northern Alberta.

Wood Buffalo RCMP said a prisoner had escaped custody by driving off in a Sheriff’s prisoner van from the Fort McMurray court house Monday afternoon.

Police then received a complaint about a dangerous driver. officers found the abandoned Sheriff van a suspect, Lyndon Rankin, nearby.

The 21-year-old St. Albert native was charged with escaping lawful custody, theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a vehicle and possession of cocaine under the controlled drugs and substances act.

Police said no one was injured during the escape attempt.

Rankin will remain in custody, and is schedule to appear in court Jan. 9.
