A female driver was issued her sixth distracted driving ticket in the last three years on Sunday after trying to take a selfie while driving in West Vancouver.

At approximately 2:15 p.m., a patrol officer noticed a driver stopped in heavy traffic on Taylor Way near Marine Drive attempting to take a selfie with her iPhone.

Cst. Jeff Palmer with West Vancouver Police says the 39-year-old driver appeared so distracted by the selfie attempt that she did not notice the officer pulling alongside in a large and fully marked cruiser.

The officer eventually did get the driver’s attention and conducted a traffic stop.

The driver was found to have had five prior distracted driving offences since 2013.

If convicted for this violation, Palmer says the driver would have two distracted driving offences since new legislation took effect this year, meaning the ticket will carry the $368 fine plus a $520 ICBC Penalty Point Premium adding up to a total cost of $888.

Additionally, since this would be a second infraction within a 12-month period, the driver is subject to review under the Provincial Driver Improvement Program and could be subject to a three to 12 month driving prohibition.

Palmer told Global News they don’t have information on whether any of the driver’s five prior distracted driving offences involved taking selfies.
