MONTREAL – Yellow Pages Group plans to create about 170 Montreal-based information and digital technology positions as the directories publisher transitions to an online media company.
But about 125 clerical positions will be moved to other company offices across Canada from Montreal, as the Yellow Pages Group division reorganizes various office locations into specialized teams.
“We continue to align our resources in accordance with the transition and expansion of our digital products and services,” Marc Tellier, president and CEO of Yellow Pages Group, said Tuesday.
“The substantial growth of our digital teams and centralization of our service teams reiterates our commitment to accelerating our digital transformation and to providing our clients access to quality service and expertise,” Tellier said in a news release.

Parent company Yellow Media (TSX:YLO) didn’t provide any numbers on job losses due to the reorganization, adding the changes will take place over the next few months and all employees who are interested will be given the option to transfer.
“Those who can’t may be reassigned to other positions within the company. Of course, we’re committed throughout this process to treating all our colleagues in a fair and respectful manner,” a company spokeswoman said.
The 170 new positions will support web and mobile-based products and the changing needs of small and medium-sized businesses.
Yellow Media builds websites for small- and medium-sized businesses and provides such services as email marketing, search engine marketing and video production.
The clerical arm of the company’s print publishing operations in Blue Bell, Penn., will also be relocated to YPG’s offices in Indianapolis, Indiana, and in Toronto.
Daily operations including client account services will be unaffected by these changes, the Montreal company said.
The company – which printed its first directory in 1908 when it was still part of Bell Canada – has been transforming itself in recent years to cope with competitive pressures as consumers find information about local businesses online and on mobile devices.
Yellow Media has a recapitalization plan to pay down $1.8 billion in debt.
Yellow Media owns and operates some of Canada’s leading properties and publications including Yellow Pages directories, YellowPages.ca, Canada411.ca and RedFlagDeals.com.
