WATCH: ‘Chaotic’ Adidas sneaker release turns violent in Vancouver

An event at the Adidas store on Granville Street in Vancouver got out of hand Friday night when the crowd of hundreds turned violent.

The store was set to release the limited BAPE x adidas originals collection and were reportedly raffling off the opportunity to purchase the sneakers upon release on Saturday.

But by 8 p.m., there were roughly 300 people crowded on Granville Street outside the store, according to Aaron Chapman who was at the Commodore Ballroom at the time.

Without any security in sight, Chapman said the crowd became unruly by about 9 p.m. when an apparently intoxicated man began throwing punches.

“He was waving his fists around at people, then he took his shirt off and was sort of yelling at people and challenging them, and then he eventually took his belt off and began swinging it around,” Chapman said.

Video of the incident shows the man surrounded by a crowd of people as he lunges and whips several people with his belt. Someone then jumped in and tackled him to the ground and the crowd charged toward him at all angles.

Police officers arrived on scene and the man was pushed onto the hood of the patrol car and handcuffed.

Chapman said he was surprised at the lack of security.

“Whether from lack of planning or they just didn’t anticipate the response, it didn’t seem like the Adidas store had anything in place. It was pretty chaotic, I haven’t really seen anything like that down there.”

The shoes being release on Saturday, the BAPE x adidas NMD R1 Camo, are already reselling on Craigslist for $1,200. Their original retail price was $150.

Reviews on the shoe’s webpage calls them the “Maserati of shoes” and “a must have for any shoe collector.”

Calls to the Adidas store on Granville Street were not returned by deadline.
