WINNIPEG — A Winnipeg city councillor wants to find out if extending parking restrictions on St. Anne’s Rd. would ease rush hour traffic congestion.
A civic committee approved councillor Brian Mayes’ request for a traffic study to look at the issue on Tuesday.
“There are a lot of people, way more than when I was a kid, using that as their way home so if we can help the flow a little bit I think that’s worth looking at,” said Mayes.
The study will look at increasing the amount of time that drivers cannot park on St. Anne’s Rd. by up to an hour, starting at 3 p.m. instead of 3:30 p.m. and ending at 6 p.m. instead of 5:30 p.m.
Expanding neighbourhoods in the south part of the city has driven up traffic volumes, said Mayes.
“The time has come to take a look at that,” he continued.
The study will look at the stretch of St. Anne’s between St. Mary’s Rd. and Bishop Grandin Blvd.
Parking restrictions were extended on St. Mary’s Rd. in 2012 by half an hour to 6 p.m.
The city said their transportation staff noticed an improvement in traffic flow after the change was made.
The traffic study will still need further approvals at City Hall before it happens.
