Calgary police are thanking the public for help locating a truck involved in a bizarre incident that started in the city’s southeast on Monday and ended near Edmonton early Tuesday morning.

It began when an officer in a marked police vehicle spotted a Dodge Ram stopped in the inside lane of Calgary’s McKenzie Towne roundabout at around 11 a.m. Monday and pulled over to offer help.

As the officer approached the vehicle, he noticed a young girl sitting in the front passenger seat who appeared visibly upset. She was described as between 10 and 13 years old.

According to a Monday news release, the officer instructed the female driver to roll down her window, at which time she took off.

The truck travelled westbound on Mackenzie Boulevard before taking the northbound exit onto Deerfoot Trail, eventually using the off-ramp for eastbound 130 Avenue S.E. At this point, police said the truck hit a car that had stopped for a pedestrian, but continued heading eastbound on 130 Avenue S.E. without stopping.

RCMP stopped the truck at about 3 a.m. Tuesday near Edmonton on an “unrelated matter” and notified Calgary police.

Charges are pending against the driver, including fleeing police, driving dangerously and committing a hit and run.

Police said both the child and driver were found in good condition.

“While public tips did not lead to an arrest in this case, information provided by citizens often plays a crucial role in moving investigations forward and the public’s willingness to help keep Calgarians safe is always appreciated,” police said in a statement sent late Tuesday afternoon, providing no further details.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call police at 403-266-1234 or contact Crime Stoppers.
