Santa Claus pops by Portage for annual parade

WINNIPEG — Santa Claus and his parade will be taking over Portage Avenue Saturday to kick of Christmas festivities in the city.

The block parties start at 4 p.m., with the parade beginning at 5 p.m.

Block parties will have a little something for the whole family. From street hockey on Portage Avenue to salsa dancing on Memorial/Colony. Also, keep an eye out for the hot chocolate and candy canes.

It’ll start at Portage Avenue and Young Street and head east down Portage all the way to Main Street. Then it will continue south down Main Street and turn on to William Stephenson Way, ending at Westbrook Street.

If you’re planning to head over in your car to the parade, a reminder that starting at 2 p.m. Portage Avenue will be closed in the areas of the parade and at 2:30 p.m. the Main Street closures will come in. Closures are expected to last until at least 8 p.m.

Transit will also be re-routing during the closures.

A bonus for everyone wanting to keep a little warmer than usual, temperatures will not drop down to the usual lows that come with the Santa Claus parade.
