Ghosts and goblins seem to be out this year for many Torontonians who are instead turning to popular local landmarks, symbols and celebrities for Halloween costume ideas.

Designer Rob Shostak has been getting a lot of ‘likes’ online after creating an Honest Ed’s costume. He painted the store’s legendary sign lettering on a pair of pants and re-created its outdoor building sign – complete with working solar-powered lights – on a much smaller scale.

Shostak, who moved to Toronto 11 years ago, usually incorporates the city into his costumes. He has dressed as a TTC subway map, the OCAD building and City Hall in the past.

“I live here and I love this city, and this is kind of my way of showing it,” Shostak told Global News Monday.

“With the final year of Honest Ed’s, I thought this would be an homage to the building and the iconic landmark that it is, and everything that it stands for.”

Meanwhile, after the Toronto Blue Jays made another playoff appearance this year, makeup artist Stephanie Marziano-Hillhouse took the beer throwing incident from the AL wild-card game as inspiration and used makeup to show a can sticking out of her left eye.

“Halloween is my favorite part of the year. I love doing crazy, gory makeup and never get a chance to really do that other then this time of the year,” Marziano-Hillhouse told Global News.

“I know the beer throwing incident was very recent and caught a lot of attention. I am indeed a Toronto Blue Jays fan, so I wanted to represent my city in some way that would catch people’s eye and make them laugh at the same time.”

She said the special effects makeup around her eye took the bulk of her time.

However, some Jays fans are dressing up as some of the team’s stars such as Edwin Encarnacion.

‘The Red Rocket’ has also proven to be popular choice as kids and pets alike are dressing as new and old TTC streetcars.

If you’re looking to show off your costume tonight, head to downtown Toronto for Halloween on Church.

Billed as “Canada’s biggest and best Halloween block party,” the Church-Wellesley Village BIA will be closing Church Street between Wood and Gloucester streets from 6:00 p.m. Monday to 2:00 a.m. Tuesday for the annual bash.
