TORONTO – When Vancouver resident Eryn Newhook planned a quick getaway with her boyfriend to New York City for a few days, surviving a superstorm was not part of her itinerary.
Global News spoke to Newhook on the phone about her experience on Tuesday afternoon. She says the atmosphere is now calm and the day feels like “a typical Vancouver day,” as it’s raining there.
But she described the scene last night as very different.
On Monday, Newhook says she was notified that her return flight to Vancouver was cancelled and that they had to evacuate their Gramercy Park area hotel due to flooding concerns. The couple managed to take shelter in a friend’s apartment in uptown Manhattan where there were no power outages or possibilities of flooding.

Newhook says buses and subways are still not operating, although there are taxis in service. Although most places appear to have power in the area she is staying in, finding something to do in the afterstorm is a bit challenging.

“Stores, restaurants, tourists attractions ..everything is closed. We’re walking around the city trying to find something to do right now.”
The couple is supposed to leave tomorrow evening back to Vancouver, if all goes well.
