A seven-year-old girl from New Hampshire is crediting her mother with saving her life after she dropped a quarter in a gumball machine and got drugs instead of a toy.
Allyson Jones was with her family at a pizza store on Oct. 21 when she asked if she could get a toy from a vending machine.
“I like to get like toys, like bouncy balls, because I really like those,” Allyson said to NBC affiliate, WHDH news.
The girl’s grandmother gave her a quarter for the machine. However, Allyson’s mother noticed something strange.
Jones said she looked inside the container and then showed it to Allyson’s grandmother.
“[Her grandmother] said, ‘no that’s real medication.’ And we were just in shock and I’m still in shock. I don’t know how it happened, I don’t know how it got in there,” said Jones.
The family called police who said the pills “weren’t narcotics.”
“They appear to be blood pressure medication due to the size, the colour and the imprint on the medication itself,” Lieut. Todd Pinkham of the Rochester police department told WHDH.
However, with Halloween coming up Jones said this should serve as a reminder to parents to make sure they know what their kids are consuming.
“Just double check your kids’ candy. Make sure they’re safe,” warned Jones.
Allyson said she’s thankful for her mother’s actions.
“I think she saved my life,” Allyson told WHDH.
The pizza shop has since removed the gumball machine.
Police continue to investigate.
