Several east-end Toronto homes were evacuated after police located live grenades and firearms inside a residence Wednesday night.

Police said they were executing a search warrant when they found the items at a home on Canlish Road near Birchmount Road and Lawrence Avenue in Scarborough.

The bomb disposal unit was called in and removed 13 grenades.

A man in his 30s was arrested and faces possession of explosive substance and firearms charges.

Police said the search warrant was initiated by the Canada Border Services Agency.

Residents were allowed back into their homes after the area was deemed safe.

Police said there was no direct threat to the public and the evacuation order was given as a precaution.
