Toronto city council’s executive committee voted on Wednesday not to proceed with a bid to host Expo 2025.
The decision comes less than a week after a city staff report recommended against hosting the world’s fair due to the $1.9 billion price tag.
Despite deputations from dozens of supporters for the bid, Deputy Mayor Denzil Minnan-Wong said the money for event will be better used to build transit and affordable housing.

However, Mayor John Tory moved a motion that would have council remain open to looking at hosting future large-scale events such as the Olympic Games and Expo 2030.
A final vote on the current Expo bid will be brought forward to a full city council vote next month.
