Samsung will now swap your Galaxy Note 7 at Canadian airports

Thanks to a growing flight ban on Samsung’s recalled Galaxy Note 7 smartphone, the company has positioned customer service agents at three major Canadian airports to facilitate returns for those who are stuck travelling with the device.

Last week, both Transport Canada and the U.S. Department of Transportation issued an emergency order banning customers and flight crews from bringing the Note 7 smartphones on board flights due to the risk of explosion.

That means any passengers carrying the phone with them while travelling will not be allowed to bring it on board their flight. Additionally, those who try to evade the ban by packing the phones in checked luggage may be subject to criminal prosecution in addition to fines.

But the flight ban has already caused major headaches for Note 7 users who were travelling outside of their home country when the global recall was announced. Because users are forced to hand over the smartphone before boarding a plane, many are left wondering how they will ever return their device for a refund.

“I flew from California to Israel for vacation a week ago, kept my Note 7 powered down in my pocket while on United Airlines on the way. I plan to fly back to California later this week — but now what? There’s no way I can think of to get my phone from Israel to my home in California,” one Note 7 user told Gizmodo. 

“If I can’t get it home, how am I going to turn it in for a rebate or for a new phone?”

Because of this, Samsung has begun positioning customer service representatives at airports around the world to facilitate Note 7 returns.

A Samsung spokesperson told Global News company representatives will be available on site for passengers travelling from Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal international airports.

Those who arrange a product return at one of the kiosks will be required to complete a registration form to co-ordinate a permanent exchange or refund upon return to their final destination and will be set up with a loaner device to use.
