Zombies 101

Do you believe in zombies? There’s a question I never pictured myself asking anyone. But recently, it’s a question I have asked more than a dozen times. Surprisingly, more often than not the answer was “yes.” That’s what happens when you decide to do a story on people training to survive a zombie apocalypse.

I traveled with 16×9 Director of Photography, Kirk Neff, to Los Angeles, California to meet up with Matt Mogk – the founder of the Zombie Research Society – to learn more about the inner workings of the zombie.

According to Mogk, there is no rule of thumb when it comes to zombies. Some are fast, others lumber along slowly. But the general consensus is they’re not that bright. You won’t find them reciting poetry or concocting an elaborate plan to take over the world. So outsmarting a zombie appears to be the best plan for surviving the brain eating monsters.

Zombies, according to Mogk, come in different forms for different people. Mogk says the Zombie Research Society classifies zombies into two different categories:

1) The aggressive reanimated human corpse

2) Human driven by a biological infection – AKA the undead zombie.

The human corpse zombie is pretty straight forward. It’s essentially a person who has come back to life – all legs and teeth – hell bent on eating their way through humanity until there is no one left. Enough said…

The undead zombie is a little more nuanced. It’s a human who has become infected with an infectious disease or virus – picture someone with an extreme case of rabies. According to Mogk, many zombie survival circles focus on this type of monster because this zombie is more difficult to kill and requires well planned out strategies to survive.

But regardless of the version your “zombie” comes in – most within the community would agree on the method to kill the monster. In order to truly “survive” a zombie outbreak/plague/apocalypse you have to destroy the brain. So no matter the weapon you have in hand – aim for the head – and hopefully that will give you the chance to escape and live to see another day…
