Children who have never played ice hockey will get to try out the sport over the next six weeks thanks to an introductory program sponsored by Canadian Tire.

The First Shift program costs $199 and includes new equipment and six on-ice sessions.

Since 2014, more than 4,800 families across Canada have been introduced to hockey because of the program.

“We mostly sit in the stands and watch our brothers play hockey,” said newcomer Preslee Fleck.

“I would like it when my brother gives me tips so it can be something my brother and I can have, a connection,” said Alina Beath, a nice-year-old who is trying the sport for the first time.

Fleck and Beath are also looking forward to friend time on the ice.

“If she likes it, she likes it and we’ll go forward with it,” said Preslee’s dad Jeff Fleck. “If not, then this gear will go to use for someone else.”
