A homeowner was shot during a home invasion and robbery in Edmonton’s north side early Monday morning.

Police said a couple and their parents were asleep in their Beverly neighbourhood home when the couple was reportedly awoken at 4:30 a.m. by two strangers in their bedroom. The intruders were pointing a gun and yelling at the homeowners.

The victims, who asked not to be identified, said the intruders were wearing balaclavas and bandanas over their heads and around their faces.

The assailants allegedly demanded drugs and money. The homeowners said they told the intruders they had entered the wrong house.

One of the homeowners allegedly confronted one of the masked assailants who was stealing guitars and an amplifier, when the homeowner was shot in the back with a birdshot, which is the smallest size shot for shotguns. The intruders then reportedly fled through the front door and the homeowners called police.

According to police, the man who was shot suffered minor injuries. He was treated and released at the scene.

“There were two suspects that were involved. Information about them and possible information about their vehicles will be released at a later date.” Det. David Goodkey said.

Edmonton police are searching for the two suspects. Investigators said they thought they had found the suspect’s vehicle at the Beverly Motel Monday morning, but police said it wasn’t the vehicle used in the incident.

Last week, there was another home invasion in north Edmonton that resulted in two homeowners being injured and a man being shot and killed. Police said two homeowners were tied up, blindfolded and asked for drugs and money before being “severely assaulted.

One of the three men suspected of being involved in the home invasion was shot and killed in the incident.

Police said they don’t believe the man was shot by one of the homeowners.

On Monday morning, investigators said they don’t believe the two incidents are related.
