Edmonton police released more details Tuesday afternoon about an overnight home invasion that injured a couple and left another man dead.

They said homicide detectives now believe the residence involved was “wrongly targeted.”

Officers were called to a home on McConachie Boulevard near McConachie Drive in the city’s northeast at about 2:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a break and enter and aggravated assault.

According to police, a man and woman who live in the home were tied up, blindfolded and asked for drugs and money before being “severely assaulted.” Police said they received reports of shots being fired in the home shortly after the break-in.

“Shortly after the break and enter, I believe it was the couple, they reported the call to police,” Edmonton Police Service spokesperson Patrycia Thenu said. “They also reported they heard shots fired in the home.”

When officers arrived, they found a man in the basement who appeared to have been shot. He was rushed to hospital where he died later Tuesday morning.

“All those events happened very quickly after the call came into police,” Thenu said.

Late Tuesday afternoon, police revealed the man who died was one of three men suspected of being involved in the home invasion. They added they do not believe the couple shot the intruder.

On Wednesday, police said an autopsy confirmed the man died from a gunshot. Police have identified the deceased as 23-year-old Omar Terrence Albert.

A GoFundMe page set up to raise money for his funeral describes Albert as “a loving, joyful person, not to mention loyal.”

“He would always keep you laughing and making sure you are good at all times.”

The neighbour looked out her door and said the woman was yelling at police officers.

Another neighbour said the woman who was yelling had allegedly escaped and had run to a nearby home to call 911.

According to police, the man who was assaulted is still being treated in hospital for non-life-threatening injuries suffered during the incident but they did not disclose the condition of his partner except to say her injuries were less severe than his.

Police said the address of the home next door is known to them and being looked at in their investigation. Officers obtained a search warrant for the adjacent home and said several people were taken into custody but that it was too early to say if they are suspected of any wrongdoing.

Police are looking for two suspects in connection with the break-in.

The first suspect is described as a black man in his early to mid-20s, about 5’10” to 6’0″ tall and with a medium build, clean shaven, wearing a dark hoodie and darker jeans and dark gloves. He was also wearing dark, round, thick-rimmed eyeglasses.

The second suspect is described as a man in his late 20s, about 5’10” to 5’11” with a stocky or heavier build and was wearing a dark hoodie and sweatpants. He also had a short beard.
