Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning in effect for Banff National Park at around 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
A total amount of 20 centimetres of snow is expected.
Environment Canada stated that “a disturbance moving into Alberta from British Columbia will bring snow to central Alberta tonight. As it passes over the mountains, it is expected to drop up to 20 cm of snow in parts of the Banff region by Sunday morning”.
The heaviest snow is expected to fall along the Icefields Parkway and the Lake Louise area, whereas the townsite of Banff will likely only see snowfall in the 5 to 10 cm range, according to Environment Canada.
Precipitation started as rain and is expected to change to snow early Saturday evening.
Weather officials said snow will begin to gradually taper off to flurries Sunday morning.
Environment Canada also issued a reminder to be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.
Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight.
