Unemployment rises in Saskatchewan during September

Saskatchewan’s unemployment rate rose in September.

Statistics Canada reported on Friday that the jobless rate was 6.8 per cent, up 0.5 percentage points from August.

The increase is due to more people entering the workforce.

While the number of people working remained steady at just over 569,000, the labour force increased by 3,600 people to 611,000.

That pushed the number of people looking for work up to 41,700 in September, up 3,200 from August.

On a year-over-year basis, the number of people working the province is down 1.1 per cent while unemployment is up 1.6 percentage points from September 2015.

The national unemployment rate for September was 7.0 per cent.
