Saskatchewan’s unemployment rate has jumped over 30 per cent in the last year, according to new numbers released Friday by Statistics Canada.

The agency said the August unemployment rate was unchanged from July at 6.3 per cent in August, but is up 32.3 per cent from August 2015, when the unemployment rate was 4.7 per cent.

In August, there were 4,500 fewer full-time jobs than the same time last year, a 0.8 per cent decrease.

The numbers were worse in Alberta, where jobs numbers fell by 53,000, a 2.3 per cent change compared to last August.

Alberta was the only province besides Saskatchewan to have unemployment jump by over 30 per cent, since the same time last year. From August 2015 to August 2016, Alberta’s unemployment went up by 37.2 per cent. The unemployment rate in Alberta in August 2015 was 6.0 per cent and is now 8.4 per cent.

Across the country, 26,200 new jobs were added but the unemployment went up to 7.0 per cent compared to 6.9 per cent last month as more people started looking for work.
