The first storm of fall will hit the B.C. South Coast Thursday night, bringing with it high winds and heavy rain.
Approximately 30 to 40 mm of rain is expected to fall Thursday night in Vancouver with southeast winds of 30 km/h inland and 60 km/h by the water.
Western and eastern Vancouver Island, Victoria, Southern Gulf Islands, and the Sunshine Coast are under a wind warning from Environment Canada with 70 to 80 km/h southeast winds expected.
The high winds and rain may result in power outages, flooding, and ferry delays.
BC Ferries cancelled sailings between Cortes Island and Quadra Island Thursday evening due to weather conditions.
The weather is, however, expected to improve by morning. Global News senior meteorologist Kristi Gordon said the system is moving fast, but other smaller systems are on its tail.
Rain and light winds will continue throughout the Thanksgiving long weekend before the sun returns on Monday.
Gordon said B.C.’s storm will be nothing in comparison to Hurricane Matthew which made landfall in the Caribbean and U.S. this week.
“I want people to understand I am aware tonight’s winds are nothing in comparison to the deadly winds experienced in countries like Haiti. But this is the first big rain and wind storm of the fall season and it certainly will have some effects on the region.”
