B.C. Conservation officers captured a 600-pound grizzly bear on the Sunshine Coast Thursday.
The bears aren’t typically native to the Sunshine Coast but have appeared in the region in recent months. One young male grizzly was killed in the Egmont neighbourhood at the end of August after killing a farmer’s pig.
Thursday’s capture marks the second recorded grizzly in the area.
The bear, which is likely the same one that was filmed ignoring a barking dog earlier this week, was captured in West Sechelt.
B.C. Conservation’s Deputy Chief Chris Doyle said they suspect the mature bear had killed and eaten a black bear in the area, but has no history of aggression toward humans.
The Conservation Service is now preparing to relocate the bear to its “home range.”
