Thousands will attempt to catch a glimpse, but a handful of lucky UBC Okanagan students are getting the chance to get up close with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Will and Kate during their royal visit to Canada.

A small group of students will meet the royal couple when they first arrive on campus Tuesday.
Carmen Chelick is one of the lucky ones. The UBCO master’s student has been a royal fan for years.
“I watched Will and Kate get married on TV in the middle of the night,” Chelick said.

She was overwhelmed when she first heard the news.
“My heart started pumping. [I had] a lot going through my head at once.”
After the Duke and Duchess meet the first set of students, they will head to a public ceremony in the university courtyard, then on to the gymnasium where they’ll watch an inter-squad game between the nationally-acclaimed UBCO Heat women’s volleyball team.

The team’s three captains will be tasked with giving the royal couple a gift after the game.
“We didn’t believe this was true at first,” captain Megan Festival said.
She even joked that with Kate’s athletic past, the Duchess could have a spot on the team.
Both admit they’re a bit nervous about meeting Will and Kate, but know its the chance of a lifetime.
