Threat made to all schools in Winnipeg School Division ‘a hoax’

WINNIPEG — Police are investigating a threat that came to the Winnipeg School Division Wednesday morning.

Police said the division received a fax message that contained “a threat to all schools within the division.”

Police aren’t releasing any information about the nature of the threat, but said early indications show “the threat is unfounded.”

None of the schools were put on lock down or evacuated.

In an email statement the Winnipeg School Division said it contacted police as soon as it received the threat and “Following WPS direction, we informed our schools of the threat and asked them to be extra vigilant to maintain school safety while police investigate.  We were informed by WPS at about 10:30 that the threat was deemed a hoax.”

Police said it also appears the threat is similar in nature to those that have been received by schools and school divisions in other Canadian cities, including Prince Edward Island and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Earlier this morning all schools in P.E.I were evacuated following an unspecified threat.

There are also reports of threats of a similar nature being received at a location in the U.S.
