The City of Lethbridge announced nearly three acres of land has been set aside for a fenced-in dog park in the west Lethbridge community of RiverStone.
The plans include an obstacle course for curious pooches, water fountains for people and their pups, pathways, benches and a dedicated parking area.
Residents and their furry friends at other parks in the city are excited for what the new park will have to offer.
“I think that the new facility on the west side will be awesome, especially the dog fountains,” Kara Popson said, as she walked her dogs at the Scenic Drive dog park. “Most people just pop off the top of a water bottle and give them water here.”
“People who are pet owners really think of their pets as their children, so this is one more opportunity to include recreation for the whole family,” City of Lethbridge land development manager Abby Slovack said.
The park is under construction at the southernmost entrance to RiverStone, just off the roundabout that connects the neighbourhoods of Paradise Canyon, SunRidge and RiverStone to University Drive.

“It was just supposed to be some open green space, so we thought it would be neat to do something fun with it,” Slovack said. “We felt that it would be good for the residents of RiverStone who have pets, as well as anyone living in west Lethbridge.”

Popson said she appreciates that the city is building more accessible parks closer to homes to accommodate all dog lovers.
“I think that there are a lot of people who have dogs who do have full-time jobs and kids,” Popson said. “I think it would be great to have something so close.”
Construction is underway at the site. The park is expected to open in spring 2017.
Slovak said there are already plans for a similar park on the city’s north end, which will go before city council in the spring.
