Robert and the giant peach: a Kelowna tale

It’s been a big year for produce at Roseridge Orchard and Market in Kelowna.

The onions are big.

The cabbages are big-and the peaches are downright huge.

In fact, Robert Hogue believes one of his peaches is worthy of the Guinness Book of World Records.

“One weighs in at 810 grams, approximately, and that beats the previous world record of 768 grams.”

Hogue says a hot spring and cooler summer are perfect conditions for growing large peaches, but even he was surprised to find one that weighed almost a kilogram.

“I was like, oh my God!”

Now it’s a race against the clock to get the size of the peach authenticated by two independent scientists.

Then to prove it is a real peach, Hogue has to eat it on camera.

Hogue says he only has a few days before his peach starts losing moisture or rotting.

He says he’s already contacted the University of British Columbia Okanagan’s chemistry department and plans on contacting the Summerland Research and Development Centre as well.
